A new Genre in Watercolour Landscapes

Artist Sachin Naik has published his first book on Watercolour Landscapes. Seeing his book just makes me compare it to the various Gharanas or Genres which prevail in Indian music and other performing arts. Ofcourse in the art of painting, there is no such concept. I just wonder why only the painting field was left out of this system. But still I would say as in music, a certain kind of style or way of presenting/performing defines the Gharana. Students learn for years from their guru and take the tradition forward. Many students gradually develop to such heights that they create something new out of it. But the base is the same.

I think Artist Sachin Naik has created such a Genre in watercolour landscapes through his style and his book. His style of rendering landscapes would create that base which i am talking about. There was a big vaccum in terms of a good Indian book for guidance on the subject, which Sachin Naik has filled in. It would be of great help to art students who are passionate about painting landscapes. A detail study of this book would create such a strong base in them and then they can develop on their own. But still their work would have some kind of a virtual influence of this Genre.

I would not say that, his is the only one style to paint landscapes, there are others too. There are a very few good watercolour landscape artists in India. And also a style develops accordingly, depending on the nature of the person practising it. Some people are inclined more towards doing detailing, some paint in a bold way or vice versa. The style is what gives an identity to the artist and detailing should be done wherever required in the painting. Just imagine all the artists painting in just one style. The main difference between many other landscapes and Sachin Naik's is that many of the others are just good looking landscapes. They do not reflect the indepth study of the subject and the medium.

Some artist may criticize and say that his style is a very detailed, illustrative one or such kind of comments. But i would say these are those people who paint their landscapes using photographs of the location, sitting in their studios. This artists don't dare to do the details as they know within themselves the limitations of their skills. There are herds of such landscape artists who have come up during recent times, who are exhibiting and selling their landscapes. This artists have only survived because the audience or the buyer is not very much evolved in India. This artists can criticize but cannot ignore his work.

So check out the book. It guides you through 27 study sessions for beginners, as well as others who are practising this art and it also has a Gallery of the best of his works. Presently this book is available only at art shops in Pune, else you can order it through his website. For details to buy the book please go to his site and contact him. Here is the link
